Since the first ESSM Meeting in Porto Carras, Greece, back in 1995, this has been the 13th Congress of Our Society, where we were celebrating its 15th Anniversary. Happy Birthday, ESSM! “Live Long and Prosper”. As usual, this meeting constitutes the annual highlight of Sexual Medicine in Europe and even world-wide where ESSM meets its affiliated Societies. This year our top event was hosted by the Spanish Association of Andrology, Sexual and Reproductive Medicine (ASESA), chaired by Antonio Martin Morales, a really dedicated man with unique characteristics that made us feel at home, warm and comfortable. Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol which belongs to the southern region of Andalucía which is famous for its beautiful nature, typical white villages, vibrant cities, costal fishing villages, flamenco, bullfighting, fantastic outdoor activities and mild winters. There was a lot of hard work to develop an innovative scientific program for this congress where men’s, women’s, and couple’s issues were comprehensively discussed. It is time for a huge “Thank You” to our Chairman of the ESSM Scientific Committee, Dr. Andrea Salonia, that indeed made a wonderful job by putting this program altogether…….

showScientific Highlights provided by Andrea Salonia

a) Surgery for sexual dysfunction
We realized during the different days of the ESSM Congress that 6 sessions were entirely devoted to the surgical field, including aspects of prosthetic surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the penis, both in the simplest cases and in extremely complex situations that the specialist can meet every day in his clinical practice, as well. This was made possible by debates - even vibrant - including some of the leading surgeons present on the world scenario, who brought their own techniques especially in light of severe criticisms upon the more correct and discordant  indications to the surgery itself.

In details:

  • VC-01 Video Surgery Course
  • RT-10 Peyronie’s disease: still a pain in the neck! A critical reappraisal
  • ML-05 SMSNA Lecture: penile augmentation surgery – quo vadis?
  • PS-05 Surgery and Peyronie’s disease
  • RT-17 Prevention and management of male genital emergencies
  • RT-18 The “bull fighting experience”: My surgery works better in severe cases of Peyronie’s disease!

In addition, an entire session was dedicated to an important debate on rehabilitation of erectile function after radical prostatectomy, an evergreen issue of sexual medicine. This topic was debated for the first time at ESSM, and was likely addressed for the first time with a truly comprehensive comparison between open surgery and robot-assisted surgery (RALP). To this end, we had the opportunity of having among us some of the world's leading experts in the field.

In details:

  • RT-05  Postoperative sexual function following radical prostatectomy: which approach is better in 2010?

Likewise, for the first time to ESSM and, perhaps for the first time in an European forum, we were able to discuss surgical emergencies in the field of andrology, starting from priapism, to fractures in the penis, Fournier's gangrene, genitals’ trauma of different types and severity.
The various formal sessions during the congress were then complemented by an excellent educational program dedicated to the penile prosthetic surgery and the gender reassignment surgery.

In details:

  • EC-06  The role of penile prosthesis in contemporary sexual medicine practice
  • EC-03  Gender Reassignment Surgery

b) Sexual medicine disorders of both genders in the everyday clinical practice
One of the main goals for the Malaga Congress has been to focus on several aspects of the everyday clinical practice, especially making treatments for sexual disorders physician-friendly in difficult-to-be-treated populations. With this aim in mind, the congress days included several translational discussions from physiopathology to the clinical scenario in order to tailor the right therapy for the right patient at all times. In this context, a renewed focus was directed upon the dramatic role and the several impacts of the numerous sexually transmitted diseases in the “real-life word”.

In details:

  • RT-1 Sexually transmitted diseases: challenges in the “real-life” world
  • EC-02 What does the sexual physician need to know about genital dermatology
  • RT-11 Who deserves what? A more focused pharmacological approach for sexual dysfunctions
  • RT-16 How to approach sexual dysfunction in 2010 – sharing the experience of different European countries

Of great appeal, the Congress proposed a number of useful sessions on men’s endocrine aspects, with attention paid to the role of testosterone with regards to the overall men’s health, and – particularly, to prostate’s health. Likewise, rates and predictors of female sexual dysfunction have been discussed throughout the reproductive cycle.

In details:

  • ML-02  Long term outcomes of testosterone deficiency on prostate and sexual health: The Registry of Hypogonadism in Men (RHYME)
  • RT-15 Is testosterone dangerous for prostate health?
  • RT-19 Testosterone, Who Hates You?
  • RT-03 Is sexual health of importance in patients with heart failure? The case for erectile dysfunction
  • RT-04 Who, where and why? The demography of female sexual dysfunction throughout the reproductive cycle
  • EC-05 Contraception and HRT for women in contemporary clinical practice

c) Translational research in sexual medicine
One of the items ESSM has always considered of greater importance was the opportunity to grow intellectually and to broadly promote knowledge in the field of Sexual Medicine. This is why also during the conference in Malaga, we tried to pay close attention to research and, foremost, to research that could be applied to everyday life. For this particular aspect, many interesting and provocative sessions were devoted to translational science, research in the field of psychology and the combination of the different facets of quality of life and human’s health.

We want to especially remember in particular:

  • RT-08 Translational science: how to translate preclinical discoveries into clinical applications
  • RT-11 Who deserves what? A more focused pharmacological approach for sexual dysfunctions
  • RT-09 Adolescentology – Is there anyone out there who may help me?
  • RT-12 Gender differences – A novel biopsychological paradigm

ESSM annual congresses are accredited by the European Council for Continuing Education (EACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) credits to physicians. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). EACCME credits are recognized Europe-wide and in North America.

The Organizers of the 13th Congress of the European Society for Sexual Medicine gratefully acknowledge the support of our Major Sponsors, Eli Lilly and Pfizer for all their unrestricted financial support in the organization of this event and also in the natural support to most of our National Affiliated Societies (NAS). We hope that in the near future, the market conditions will allow these two companies as well as other to increase their important support to all the NAS and ESSM as well.

By the way – NAS are the “CORE” of the ESSM. As we already requested in the Opening Ceremony of the Malaga Congress, an indeed memorable event celebrating Spanish culture and art, we want all sort of contributions from our NAS. Would you like to insert a presentation online exclusively to ESSM members, or you just like to write on these SexMed subjects and would like to share it with your international colleagues online? Write to us… you won’t regret it and you will have a respectable credit in the ESSM Website. Have you ever presented a video in your National Congresses or at the ESSM Meetings? Would you like to see it in online in our slide or video library. Just send it and ask for your own space at the ESSM WEBSITE…! Do you want some feed-back from your basic and/or clinical studies, or an expert opinion on a particular surgical technique and do not want to wait for the Annual Congress – we will deal with it – just stay online  - we are about to create our SEX/MED FORUM.

And don’t forget ESSM website is updating you with a monthly (!!)review of the literature on the most recent Sexual Medicine and Andrological publications comprising more than 50 journals dealing with sexual, andrological and related issues. As a full member of ESSM you will of course have free access keeping your knowledge and expertise ahead of all those colleagues who missed to join our rapidly growing society.

Another quite logical way to promote our Annual Meetings is the issue of the “NAS SYMPOSIA AT THE ANNUAL CONGRESS”. Since 2005, Spain and Portugal organize together a small meeting at the time of the Annual Congress. Why don’t you do the same? Ask for more details at admin[at]essm.org. At this point, we also would like to inform you that at the Annual Meeting of the National Affiliated Societies Representatives (that takes place every year at the ESSM Annual Meeting), Dr. Carlo Bettocchi from Italy was re-elected to be the NAS representative in the Executive Committee of the ESSM. You can always contact with him through the Website for any doubts and/or requests.

Are you from outside Europe? Welcome…, write us and tell us what you would like to see in the Website.

Last but not least, ESSM welcomes new applications for membership from individuals who are interested in the field of Sexual Medicine. You can ask for a full membership just by clicking here . You can also apply (if it is the case) through your National Society. All NAS are provided with the tools to attract more SexMed members by telling them the advantages of becoming part of the big ESSM family that keeps growing and growing every year. It is with great pleasure that in each new Annual Congress we always meet new faces from all around Europe and other parts of this globe working in the different fields of Sexual Medicine. They are the Health of ESSM. Become one of them… and just feel the difference!
