WVSD - WETENSCHAPPELIJKE VERENIGING VOOR SEKSUELE DISFUNCTIES (THE NETHERLANDS)

In 1987, by an initiative of Michiel Hengeveld, psychiatrist and Herman Leliefeld, urologist, the "Nederlandse Vereniging voor Impotentie Onderzoek" (NVIO) = Dutch Society of Impotence Research (DSIR) was founded in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
From the start the DSIR was a multi-disciplinary scientific society. Its board and members include urologists, psychiatrists, sexologists, neurologists, psychologists, endocrinologists, vascular surgeons, cardiologists, gynaecologists and even radiologists.
In the same year, on December 18th, the first scientific congress took place in De Bilt (near Utrecht) and was a success right away: a new scientific society was born.
The DSIR started with 80 members and grew in a few years to 250 members, also by affiliation with our colleagues and friends from Belgium: "Nederlands-Vlaamse Vereniging voor Seksuele Disfuncties" (NVIO) = Dutch-Flemish Society of Impotence Research.
The objects of the DFSIR, as formulated in the regulations of 1987, are: "to advance the knowledge about diagnosis, treatment and research in the field of impotence by organising scientific meetings at least once a year, by stimulating multi-centre studies, by encouraging multidisciplinary contacts, by representation on other scientific meetings on impotence and by investigating and advising on diagnostic and therapeutic tools (somatic and psychosexual)".
It was a great pleasure to organise the fifth anniversary of the DSIR with a symposium during the 10th World Congress for Sexology in Amsterdam in 1991.
During our congresses in the past years various well known guest speakers in the field of impotence like Krane, Bancroft, Whitehead, Althof, Wespes, Wagner, Jünemann and Tiefer were invited to hold a state of the art lecture.
Due to a growing interest in female sexual dysfunction the name of the NVIO (DSIR) was changed in 2002 into "Wetenschappelijke Vereniging voor Seksuele Disfuncties" (WVSD) = Scientific Society for Sexual Dysfunctions (SSSD).
At this moment the WVSD has about 120 paying members and is affiliated with ESSM and ISSM. The last congresses concerning "Pain & Brain" in 2004 and "Sex & Internet" in January 2005 were very successful with about a 100 attendants. In 2006 the central theme of our January Congress is "Sex & Culture". With the affiliation to ESSM and ISSM we can offer our members more services.
In the Netherlands there also is a society of sexologists, the NVVS. Our society has good contacts with this society and with the Flemish Society of Sexologists. We will have a common congress in Antwerpen on the 29th and 30th of September. We hope that our contacts will result in a Dutch Flemish Society of Sexual Medicine in the future with a total of more than 400 members.
