BSSM - BRITISH SOCIETY FOR SEXUAL MEDICINE (UK)

The British Society for Sexual Medicine (BSSM) was founded in 1997, and was originally known as the British Society for Sexual and Impotence Research (BSSIR). Its purpose was to promote research and the exchange of clinical and scientific knowledge about sexual function and dysfunction within the UK scientific community. The focus at the time was predominantly on male disorders, and in particular erectile dysfunction.

However, the society recognised the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the assessment, understanding, investigation and treatment of male and female sexual disorders. Today it is an organisation open to all appropriately qualified health professionals and therapists working in the field of human sexuality with the aim of promoting co-operation and communication between the disciplines.

The society aims to encourage the highest standards in clinical practice, education and research. This has certainly been evidenced in the annual scientific meetings, where recent research and clinical developments in the field of male and female sexuality have been presented. The active participation of young scientific researchers is encouraged and supported.

The BSSM are delighted to be holding a joint meeting with the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), Section of Andrology, on 10th and 11th November 2005 in London. We will also be hosting the Second European Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) meeting in London in September 2006.
